Year of celebration comes to a glorious end

More than 170 people danced the night away at Te Horo Hall recently to celebrate her centenary. It was the fitting end to a busy year of celebration, and the heritage floor “was filled with locals stepping lightly across the boards,” to the sounds of the Andrew London Trio (temporarily increased to a friendly quartet for the night).

“There was a carnival atmosphere about the night – the hall was decorated in red, blue and green with balloon arches, bunting and heaps of hanging décor,” said spokesperson, Sharon Hurst.

Highlight was the distinctive cake made for the occasion, a wonderful iced replica of the hall exterior complete with bunting and flag pole.

Te Horo Playgroup

There can’t be many playgroups finger-painting and ink stamping in an historic church, but Te Horo Playgroup is certainly one of them.

The historic St Anne’s Anglican Church was built in 1909, Te Horo’s first church, and now resides (it was relocated in 1936) at the rear of St Margaret’s Anglican Church in School Road. Surrounded by mature trees and a well maintained vegetable, herb and fruit garden, including lemon and feijoa trees, the church now rings with the laughter of small children (and their mums).

“Our playgroup is an opportunity for local children to meet and form friendships,” said spokesperson, Penny Turner. “We’re extremely well resourced with toys and equipment for craft activities, all suitable for pre-school ages.”

The group meets every Wednesday morning between 10.00am and 1.00pm and welcomes newcomers, encouraging members to take a role either on the committee or setting up areas of play each session.

A donation of $2.00 per session covers coffee, tea and biscuits (for morning tea) but it’s also a good idea to bring a snack for your child/children.

There is a festive air about planned events for the group, which include a meeting with Father Christmas on Wednesday, 10 December, 10.00am. Just bring a plate of food to share and a wrapped and named present (under $10) for your children. Father Christmas arrives around 10.30am with shared morning tea to follow.

In the New Year on February11, 10.00am-12.00 noon, children have an opportunity to touch, hold, feed and watch visiting animals from the Zippity Zoo.

“It will be a great interactive session for the kids, with a variety of friendly animals – all welcome.”

Bring your child’s lunch box for morning tea. Tea and coffee provided.

Ag night at Te Horo School

This is a traditional highlight of the Te Horo School calendar, where children and various baby farm animals take centre stage. The recent event saw a line-up of lambs and calves put diligently through their paces – a culmination of several months of feeding, caring and developing a relationship/bond with their animal.

“It’s a special country school event and I encourage children to get involved,” said principal, Craig Vidulich.

Te Horo Christmas Market

The Te Horo Christmas Market is back for its ninth year on Saturday, 13 December from 11.00am to 2.30pm at Te Horo Hall. There’ll be heaps of stalls selling a variety of handcrafts (such as quilting and woodwork), home-baking (including Christmas food), jewellery, plants, produce and preserves, sweets and olive oil, and toys and science experiments for children.

There’ll be donkey rides for the littlies and an opportunity to write a letter to Santa, who makes an appearance during the event.
