Daffodil Time

F_Au_14_DaffsIt’s a busy time for Otaki Daffodil grower, John McLellan (pictured) preparing blooms for the Cancer Society’s Daffodil Day Collection on August 29, followed by the Otaki Spring Flower Show a week later and the National Daffodil Show on September 12.

With early varieties coming into flower in May, in time for Mother’s Day and other varieties flowering right through to October, growers are kept busy picking flowers for the market as well as getting their best blooms ready for the shows in September, when daffodils are at the peak of their flowering season. And between times the enthusiasts are busy propagating new varieties.

The Otaki Horticultural Society’s Spring Flower Show will be held at the Presbyterian Church Hall on Friday September 5 and the National Daffodil Show will be held in the Waikanae Memorial Hall from Friday September 12.
