Four lucky women spent a recent Friday afternoon being pampered by the staff at Chairs Hair Design, treated with a foot spa, hair styled and make-up all while enjoying a glass or two of wine and tasty nibbles.
Salon owner, Melanie Woodmass said she’d been in business in Otaki for 23 years and wanted to give something extra special for the Main Street Christmas Festival night, “that’s where we came up with the idea for a make-over.”
They asked for nominations of women deserving of a “treat” from the community — some said “no thanks” and the final nominations were displayed in the window. People could vote for who they felt should win the opportunity for a make-over and all funds raised — 50 cents per vote – went to the Arohanui Hospice in Palmerston North. The four lucky winners were all selected through the votes.
“It’s so so amazing, it’s been amazing hearing the stories of the others,” Howie Sampson said. “I’m 50 and never had make-up done for me. I’m very shy — but I want to make this happen for someone else! The staff are just amazing.”
“It’s been fantastic!” Janine Taratoa said. “I don’t know if I’ll go to bed tonight — I’ll have to sit up all night!”
Becky Cowan was taken away with the foot spa, hairdo and make-up. “I just want to thank Mel and the team — especially Kaya who did me,” she said. “It’s been a really lovely afternoon.”
While Tania Rikihana said she didn’t have words to express the gratitude for what had been done for them. “It’s been wonderful!”
While Chairs stylists cut, coloured and styled the women’s hair, Donna Burns from Donna’s Beauty Care did their make-up.
