The worst floods in twenty years

Otaki wasn’t alone in suffering from a downpour this time. Wanganui suffered much worse. At the Waikawa Stream, the State Highway One bridge was taken out, the Manawatu Gorge was blocked by slips, as was the Pahiatua Track.

Here in Otaki, the usual suspects suffered.

The capricious Waitohu Stream took out the Ringawhati Road bridge, Convent Road was badly flooded, as was the Golf course.

Otaki Gorge Road was impassable.

At Te Horo, Arcus and School Roads were under water, and Te Horo Beach Road was covered in places, but navigable. Freemans Road had a slip, Atkinson Avenue was flooded, and Tasman Road intersected a huge lake. Our Manakau correspondent woke to find a beehive floating down the stream, and the neighbor’s pigs shrieking in terror.

Thanks to prompt action by KCDC, NZTA and an army of volunteers, most of the problems were minimised.

There are some unresolved troublespots in Otaki that regularly cause residents grief: Bennett’s Road and Matene Place need KCDC’s attention.
