Ōtaki Pool is gearing up for summer with swimming lessons for young and old and water safety skills sessions on offer.

R_Otaki-Pool.jpgCouncil’s Parks and Recreation Manager Alison Law says children as young as six months through to beginners and adults perfecting their stroke are taking part in learn-to-swim classes in Ōtaki.

“Swimming is an essential skill to have in Kāpiti because of our many beaches and waterways,” Ms Law says.

Ōtaki Pool offers swimming lessons as block courses for children over the summer holidays for $40 for five lessons or $65 for 10 lessons. These are held on consecutive week days from 11 January.

“Swimming lessons also incorporate a water safety session that helps to develop a positive, safe relationship with water,” says Ms Law.

The pool’s hour-long ‘Waterproof your Kids’ water safety sessions are also popular. They cover river safety, beach safety and boat safety.

Ōtaki Ward councillor Penny Gaylor says community pools such as Ōtaki are the perfect place for the community to learn essential water safety skills to help keep them safe while swimming.

“We’re extremely lucky our children and their families are able to live in close proximity to beaches, rivers, lakes and streams but that means it’s even more important to educate them how to keep safe in those environments.”

Keep an eye out for dates and times of the one-off water safety programmes. Normal Pool entry applies.
