Ōtaki men win Fire Brigade Snooker tournament

JL16_FireBrigadeSnooker_F.jpgIn June, the Ōtaki Volunteer Fire Brigade hosted the New Zealand Fire Service Snooker Pairs tournament, which was in its 25th year. It was fitting that the tournament was held in Ōtaki, the home of the initial tournament in 1992.

To be eligible, you had to be a past or present member of the NZ Fire Service. 33 pairs entered, from all round NZ and Australia.

The tournament started with registration at the Ōtaki Fire Station on the Friday. Saturday morning started with breakfast at the fire station. At the RSA, players were welcomed by John Underwood, Vice President of Ōtaki RSA and President of the RSA Snooker Adjunct, and Senior Station Officer Graeme Rankin of Ōtaki Volunteer Fire Brigade. Before start of play a compulsory glass of port was had by all players in memory of former colleague and SeniorFireFighter Reg Royal who passed away the week before tournament.

Play began early, with overflow games at the fire station and a local house: a total of 8 snooker tables in action. At the end of the day, players returned to the fire station for a BBQ tea followed by light beverages and music.

Before the meal was served a presentation was made to veteran Gilbert Mahuika of Wainuiomata, who had played in every one of the 25 tournaments. Play continued on Sunday until the finalist were found in all divisions.

In the main Championship Don Watson and Richard Taratoa of Ōtaki came out winners with a hard fought 2-nil win over worthy opponents Joe Koia and Dick Cook past tournament winners. Richard and Don were runners- up last year. The trophy comes to Ōtaki for the first time since 1996.
