It’s with sadness that I share with you all the passing of Ōtaki Community Board member Colin Pearce. Colin was one of the good guys, an original “Ōakian” and represented his community with pride and passion. Colin always stood for what he felt was right and we will miss his contribution around the council table. I know many of you who contacted him for assistance will too. Our thoughts are with his wife Hillary and family.
Colin was also working on the development of Ōtaki Beach and last year held a meeting with residents canvassing their views. Right from the start we have all said this process should be driven by the people supported by the Community Board and Council (not the other way around) and we intend to continue on with that project as I know Colin would want us too and under the same philosophy. We having $262k set aside in the Long Term Plan to assist in making it happen and another $15k to refurbish the woman’s toilets at the Beach Pavilion. Board Member Rob Kofoed will lead these projects with the support of the Board and over the coming months outline the plan moving forward to achieve something good for the beach area that fits the views of many that live out there.
We have also just started our Annual Plan process which gives residents an opportunity to submit on anything they want the Council to consider that hasn’t been captured in the Long Term Plan. The projected rates for 2016/17 was 4.6% and Councilors and staff have been working hard reducing that down to 4.3% with further cost-saving options that could take it down to 3.7%. We encourage you all to read the AP Consultation Document when it’s released and make a submission.
Lastly I wanted to say a big THANKS to all that were involved in making the Ōtaki Kite Festival happen. Ōtaki is the place to be!
