Civic Chat

F_R_CIVICWhew, the last few weeks have flown by and the theatre folk have been busy preparing for the new year.

Firstly, our thanks go to John Hopkin’s at Circa Theatre for the offer of seating from their theatre and his guidance and assistance to erect them in their new home. Thank you, thank you a thousand times!

The new seats, ex Circa, have been assembled, and we now have 188 tiered seats downstairs and hope to replace the antique upstairs seating with the remaining seats, giving us almost 300 tiered seats altogether. So those attending either Waves or the Maoriland Film Festival screenings will have comfortable seats and an improved view of the stage and screen. We hope to have completed the upgrade before the musical Rent opens at the end of July.

It will be a busy time for the Civic over March, with the New Zealand Festival production Waves on stage Wednesday March 2 at 7pm.

Next up are the auditions for Rent on Saturday March 5 from midday and the following weekend is Ōtaki Players Annual General Meeting, at the theatre on Sunday March 13 at 4pm followed by refreshments and rounding out the month, the Maoriland Film Festival screenings March 23-27. Then a brief pause for a breather before rehearsals and set building begin again.

At the AGM, reports of the past year’s activities, shows, finances and achievements will be aired and the election of officers and committee for the forth coming year will take place. After the 2015 AGM only one officer was still available. Most current committee members have indicated they are available for this year, including our youth representative Madi Potiki-Grayling.

So if you have an interest in any part of live theatre, come along and see what we do between shows; you might like to join Malcolm and the Thursday boys working around the theatre on general maintenance or set building, or do you enjoy painting – there’s more refurbishment coming up, then there’s always wardrobe – making and sourcing costumes for shows or people to help front of house, we’re always open to offers of help.

Hopefully we’ll see you there on Sunday March 13.

Until next month, Margaret
