Six very special family pets came to the annual pet blessing service held at St Margaret’s Anglican Church in Te Horo. Lu was so excited she was “singing” even before the service began, beagle Ben deserted his owners for a young visitor’s attention, Andy wanted to go play with the other dogs, Sam was a bit overcome with the fuss and was wishing his owners would come home, Maltese terrier-Jack Russell cross, Sasha was a little apprehensive and Axel the guinea pig was totally uninterested in the proceedings, preferring to hide under his cover and munch on his morning tea of carrot and celery sticks.
Vicar, Ian Campbell gave each pet its own special blessing as he moved around the congregation. All the dogs behaved very well in their unusual setting and the sounds of people singing animal songs and no one disgraced him/herself!
The animal blessing Sunday is a commemoration of St Francis of Assisi, the Patron Saint of Animals and is celebrated world-wide at the beginning of October. St Francis was known for his care, protection and healing of animals.
